Coach Nelson Gifford

Coach Nelson Gifford serves as the Athletic Director and Head Football Coach at Santa Clara High School, where he leads with a commitment to building championship programs grounded in character, teamwork, and academic excellence. With years of experience as both an educator and coach, Coach Gifford believes athletics is an extension of the classroom — a space where students learn resilience, leadership, and accountability.

Since joining Santa Clara High School, Coach Gifford has focused on fostering a “Bruin Family” culture — one that celebrates gratitude, respect, enthusiasm, accountability, and truth (G.R.E.A.T.). Under his leadership, SCHS Athletics has continued to grow in participation, sportsmanship, and community engagement, providing every student-athlete the opportunity to develop their full potential.

In addition to his work in athletics, Coach Gifford teaches in the AVID program, guiding students to become lifelong learners prepared for college, career, and life. He is deeply invested in supporting the whole student — developing not just stronger athletes, but confident, capable young adults ready to make a difference in their communities.

When he’s not on the field or in the classroom, Coach Gifford enjoys spending time with his two children, staying active, and exploring new challenges in fitness, cooking, and outdoor adventures.
